Read eBook Ç Reminiscing About Retail Paperback à Becky Corwin-Adams ☆ Do you remember the dime stores of the '60s Did you ever shop at GC Murphy's Woolworth's or Newberry's Discount department stores became very popular in the '70s and dime stores began to close Stores like Kmart Grant City Murphy'sAvorite store was GC Murphy's The day I celebrated my 16th birthday I applied for a job at Murphy's I was hired a few weeks later After living in North Dakota for four years as a young Air Force wife I moved back to Ohio Retail was still in my blood I always thought I would go back to work at Murphy's someday By this time most of the Murphy's stores had closed and new Murphy's Marts were built to replace the smaller dime stores We lived very close to Kmart in Bryan The store was just a short walk across the field near our house I applied for a job I have really enjoyed this informative and descriptive non fictional novel by author Becky Corwin Adams She shares her story about her life family and her career experiences in retail; primarily about retail life in Defiance Ohio around the 1960's and 70's This book also includes further information on retail up to the current time I don't have any experience of working in retail so I have found a lot of the stories very entertaining Indeed it's fair to say I have had a laugh or two I loved Becky's description about 'The Unusual Customer' in 2005 I can just imagine the absolute carnage and the fear encountered by staff and customers alike It's reassuring to learn that they had specific procedures in place for such an incident I'm not going to reveal the specific details I also enjoyed reading the capers surrounding the celebrity cardboard figures Not being from America I liked to read about some of the product lines mentioned Even living in the UK I had heard about the 'Cabbage Patch Kids Dolls' 1983but I didn't get to hear about the fights that broke out over these dollsA toy introduced in the mid 50'sthat I was interested to read about was 'The Wooly Willy Drawing Toy' which was followed by a larger version named 'Dapper Dan The Magnetic Man' I understand that both toys are still available in stores todayThere are some descriptions by Becky that I can indeed reminisce with buying candy with a few pence before school returning pop bottles to stores to collect deposit returns Oh those were the daysI also enjoyed reading about The key cutting machine incidentsorry Becky The 1974 Toilet Paper Shortage The Security Department known as 'leakage control' The PA system taking about 10 minutes to warm up The Shoplifting Stories The District Price Checker events had a good laugh over that Kmart's 'Crazy Charlie' your worst customer experience ever and learning about the events concerning'Blue Light Specials'Last but not least the 'Final Thought' section of this needs to be read by everyone It's not always greener on the other sideOh Nearly forgot The old store photographs are great and your extensive research work Becky has made this book so much historical in detail Well Done Becky A thoroughly good and interesting read I recommend this book

At Kmart and was soon hired since I had previous retail experience at Murphy's I worked at Kmart for a total of 17 years Did you ever wonder what it was like to work in one of these stores How difficult was it to operate a manual cash register before bar codes and scanners made the task much easier Read about Halloween costume contests shoplifting stories and bluelight specials Follow the adventures of six family members who all worked at the same store If you have ever worked in retail or dreamed of a career in retail then this is the book for you Reminiscing About Retail is a firsthand account of the author's experiences working in stores such as Murphy's and KMart from the early 1970s to the early 2000s As someone who has worked in retail I much enjoyed Corwin Adam's humorous anecdotes of shoplifters managers and other retail oddities I appreciated all the information in the book I adore history and learned so much about small town retail stores of the past I also learned little known facts about stores we can still find around today like KMart and why it advertises with a blue lightbulb I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about American history or anyone who works in retail or knows someone who does As Corwin Adams writes Everyone should experience retail from the other side of the counter but if you don't this book is the next best thing
