At the end of the twenty first century Earth is under the control of a single intelligence the apparently benign One True Mars meanwhile is slowly terraforming and the human settlers there are still free of One True's controlbut they need a pressure suits to survive outside. This story felt like golden age sci fi in mostly good ways it took a premise with some very unusual ideas and followed it to see where it led The universe was weird and had its own idioms and they workedI cared deeply about the characters I hesitated before reading at several points because the sense of menace that they faced had become palpable and I didn't want them to get hurt For me this is crucial nothing can utterly sink a book if I care about the characters and believe their actions are their own and nothing can save a book with people I don't care aboutI did feel that the narrative rambled a bit there were interesting people and events but the framing around them and their stories was not precise But rambling over interesting people in an interesting universe is not that bad at all

Review The Sky So Big and Black

The Sky So Big and BlackAnd it will be a century or before the planet's fit for terrestrial life Terpsichore Murray is growing up on Mars She wants to uit school and become like her father an ecoprospector He has other ideas he wants her to stay in school He does want her along on his next long tri. Great sci fi Lots of interesting science great characters that you can't help but like some drama and some fun odd language some basis in Japanese Terpichore Teri Mel Murray and her dad are eco prospectors on Mars They live out in the roundings with the other rounditachi meaning they all live out on the surface of the planet not in the enclosed cities They all wear special suits that provide life support on the freezing Martian surface and they are in the business of any taking actions that help the terra forming of the planet like releasing pockets of methane or planting trees Barnes did a great job of portraying the lifestyle of the rounditachi the rooing or leaping moves they make to move uickly across the landscape in low gravity the life in exosuits when not in a tajj a sort of tent structure and the overall appeal but also inherent loneliness of this pioneering life It was a limward great story posreal It ended in a way I could not have anticipated but overall satisfying Recommended
