The picture book Ten Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed is a story of ten monkey children who are told to go to sleep by their mother but disobey her by jumping on the bed after she leaves the room The setting is the monkeys' bedroom and the narrator is omniscient As the reader turns each page another monkey falls off the bed and breaks his or her head When the mother calls the doctor the doctor tells them not to jump on the bed any The monkeys do not follow the doctor's orders and continue to get hurt as a result The story starts off with ten monkeys and counts down to zero until there are no monkeys jumping on the bed because they are all injured A theme and lesson of this story is to follow directions; the reason the young monkeys continued to get hurt was because they were not following the orders of the doctor and their mother This book is intended for readers who are learning to count so about ages 5 7 It is appealing to young readers because it is something to relate to Most children test their parents at some point; many of them by jumping on the bed This book teaches children that there can be negative conseuences to not following the rulesThe catchy and repetitive language is also appealing to the audience because it takes a story that could be uite sad and makes it slightly humorous The illustrations in the story also contribute to the overall lighthearted vibe of the story When someone thinks of people breaking their heads they might envision blood and guts which could potentially be uite frightening for young children This book however has illustrations that are age appropriate using cartoon images of monkeys with bandages instead of graphic pictures with gore and blood This book is also appealing to young readers because the author uses animals instead of people to tell the story Animals are appealing to children because they provide comfort; something that may be needed when reading about monkeys getting hurt A strength of this book is the repetitive language that is used to tell the story The same phrases are used throughout the book and are repeated as each monkey falls off the bed This makes the story catchy and uses rhyming which in my opinion helps the book flow and enjoyable to read I thought the book was cute and would recommend it to parents and teachers who want to teach their children how to follow rules and counting strategies I liked reading this book both as a child and as an adult As a child I thought the book was humorous because I could not believe the monkeys continued to jump on the bed despite seeing their brothers and sisters breaking their heads As an adult reading this book I appreciated recognizing the different techniues used to teach children to count
