For thirteen year old Jessie Silva life on Bayberry Island is at its best in the summertime That's when the seasonal renters return to spend their vacations on the island bringing with them Jessie's best friend Amanda This year though change has come to Bayberry For one thing there's a new girl among the 13 year old Jamie Silva lives on a small island off the coast of New York Because the island is so small and lonely she's looking forward to seeing her best friend Amanda again once summer starts and her older college friend Lara However Amanda brings another friend to Bayberry and can't spend as much time with Jamie as she originally thought Jamie feels left out but find console in the discovery of a den of coyote pups in the woods She visits them everyday watching out for the parents and her summer isn't so bad Until the townspeople find out about the coyotes and immediately want them dead Jamie has to think up a way to save them before it's too late At only 106 pages this isn't a long story for sure It reminded me of a younger version of a Carl Hiassen book where a kid has to figure out some way to save wildlife at the hands of other people Besides that there's really no point to it The writing is mediocre the story seems bland and so do the characters Besides the 'saving wildlife' factor there's really no plot or point to it

Coyote Summer Summer visitors a snotty New Yorker named Susan and she's driving a wedge between Jessie and Amanda For another there are rumors of coyotes roaming the tiny island and the locals are talking about taking up arms to stop the animals from spreading Jessie knows the rumors are true She's seen the coyotes a I bought 3 copies The first copy was for my 12 year old niece Billed as a tween novel Coyote Summer manages to capture perfectly the tumultuous social and emotional time of entering adolescence navigating new and complex emotions and asking for independence and responsibility than maybe one is ready for I knew my eldest niece would relateI bought a second copy for my 5 year old niece when I learned she was reading Little House on the Prairie by herself With its coming of age and humanity in nature themes Coyote Summer reminds me a bit of Wilder's talesOf course I will cherish my own copy Having spent summers at the island that Bayberry is based on I reveled in the descriptions of the terrain and even imagined a few of the scenes playing out in my back yard and certain islanders I know filling some character roles Last June I heard the yipping of coyote pups as I walked my dogs near the West End I'll listen again very closely this summer and think of Jessie's story
