SecretsOutcast was my first experience with the JournalStone's DoubleDown Series and I was honored to be given an ARC copy in exchange for an honest reviewI loved the concept put forth here both stories in the book built off the same prologue a young woman named Karen walking through a graveyard in search of a particular headstoneBoth authors used this jumping off point to eually creative effect I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite out of the two; both were uite enjoyableSECRETS by John R Little is the story of Karen a girl who has the ability to walk around and experience the world when time stands still which happens at random intervals throughout her life starting at the age of eight Karen believes she is the only person with this strange ability but then she meets Bobby a boy her age with the same uncanny gift At first Karen is overjoyed to meet someone else that shares this ability but it becomes clear soon enough that Bobby is too good to be true He's downright sick in the head SECRETS takes us through the years with these two and it is a strange and deadly journeyOUTCAST by Mark Allan Gunnells tells the tale of Karen in a much different way This is the longer of the two stories in the volume and is probably short novel length I read the ebook with no page numbers but I would guess it was around 200 pages We get much detailed character development in OUTCAST and a completely different storyline In this one Karen also has powers but this time it is telekinesis When she meets a witch at her college library the elder woman vows to help Karen hone her powers into something much powerful When she meets Bobby she falls for the boy but he is a strange sort of character Karen at first thinks he's gay and soon finds out that she is way off base and things are much complex than she can comprehend I can't say very much about the story without spoiling it There is a coven a guy named Jacoby that reminded me of Shaggy from Scooby Doo in a good way and the oh so annoying roommate to help round out the strange cast of characters I really liked this story even though it did seem as if it were aimed at a younger audience There are a couple scenes in it that would render it too much for my tweener daughter thoughAll around this was a great selection thanks to Mark Allan Gunnells for the chance to read the advance copy
